Dear Families,
Orange shirts were worn by many students as they reflected on the meaning of the orange shirt. Students were engaged in lessons on Truth and Reconciliation, Talking Circles and Sit Spots. We hope that families will embrace the Monday, September 30, National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
Thank you for attending Meet the Teacher Conferences, it is important that we continue to work together in support of our students and community. It was so nice to see our families in the building and to reconnect.
The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation was first established as an observance in 2013, as part of an effort to promote awareness and education of the residential school system and the impact it has had on Indigenous communities for over a century.
Physical Education (PE) Footwear
There are clear connections between the amount of exercise students get and increases in their ability to learn. At Richmond School, we believe it is important to set children up for success.
We have noticed a number of students wearing “crocs,” sandals, open-toes shoes and slippers. These types of footwear can be quite dangerous when students are engaging in vigorous physical activity, such as those in PE class and at recess.
Thus, we ask that parents and guardians remind their children not to wear these types of footwear to the gym or outside.
The best kind of shoe for students is a running shoe. In the lower grades, Velcro or slip-ons work great, while “lace-ups” are fine for those who can tie them independently.
We sincerely appreciate your support in this matter. Mr. Southworth
AMA School Safety Patrols
Starting next week, our patrollers in grade 5 and grade 6 will put their training into practice before and after school each day as part of the AMA School Safety Patrols program. Thank you for making sure to use the crosswalk as instructed by our student leaders and waiting until you hear a patroller say “Proceed!”, (or the second whistle), before crossing. It is important to respect the City of Calgary bylaw forbidding parking within 5-metres of a crosswalk, as if a car is parked too close it is more difficult for drivers to see patrollers and pedestrians. Please help us keep students safe.
